I get bored of myself!

Hottie Shahid Kapoor talks rumours

With his cartoon tee, open checked shirt, jeans and sneakers, Shahid Kapoor is very much the guy-next-door. The man you want your sister to marry. Then he smiles… and the glint reaches his eyes. Suddenly, he’s the man you want to take home to mum!

Masala! meets Shahid Kapoor at the InterContinental, Dubai Festival City, as he jets in for a whirlwind promo of Chance Pe Dance. It’s been a long day for him – but he’s as fresh as a Ken Ghosh film, laughing, chatting and flirting with ease. Here’s Shahid freewheeling through our interview, talking about everything from rumours and eight-packs to co-stars and fan moments.

Chance Pe Dance – why will a non-Shahid fan want to see the movie?

You’re making life difficult for me yaar (laughs out loud)! Hmmm, let me see. My last film was Kaminey. It got an A-rating so many people, including my three siblings, didn’t get to see it. I wanted to make a movie that everyone will watch and love. Everyone will connect with Chance Pe Dance, as all of us, at some level, have struggled. I’m sure before you became such a hotshot journalist (Masala! goes blush blush), you had to struggle, going from editor to editor with your stories. I had to struggle too. I had this Maruti, but I couldn’t afford to pay for the petrol, so I made my friends take me places…

Tell us two things about Shahid Kapoor we don’t know.

Now this is really going to put you off! I go to sleep in very old boxers and torn tees because I find them comfortable. And one more thing, I take lots and lots of photographs. I click away on the sets because my life is on the sets.

What is Shahid the man like?

I’m simple yet complicated. A lot of things are always inside me. I’m passionate about work to the point of madness.

What’s your biggest weakness as an actor?

I get bored of myself very easily. Sometimes a bit too fast. I can’t do the same thing again and again. That’s bad in a way because if you’re good in a romantic role, you should build on that. And if you’re good in action films, you should do more of that.

What’s your weirdest fan interaction?

You know, I have these parents coming up to me, carrying their kids. Sometimes they can just be three or four months old. And the parents ask for my autograph. They always say ‘Hamare liye nahin, bachche ke liye mang rahen hein!’

Do you get upset when we keep writing about you and Priyanka?

Not at all. I’ll tell you a story. Once, when I was with Shiamak Davar, we were rehearsing for an international competition. We were practising a very difficult routine 15 times at a stretch! At the end, I was just plain numb. That’s the way I feel now about rumours – plain numb. And, before you ask, I’m not in a relationship! Okaaay Shahid, we get the point!

The whole eight packs

Shahid Kapoor on his eight-pack look for Chance:

‘I’m in better shape today than I was for Kaminey! That song, where I show off my stomach, is the moment of glory for my character.’ It has to look larger than life because finally he is successful.

‘But it was very very tough getting those muscles. I had to give up everything I love for a year – no sweets, low carbs, very hectic workouts. My life became all about oats and muesli and brown rice!’

Preity Zinta on life after breakup with Ness Wadia

Now… I can’t go out with any guy’

Actress-entrepreneur Preity Zinta is starting a new chapter in her life following her breakup with businessman Ness Wadia. The only thing that bothers her are link-ups with co-stars and friends, as a result of which none of her male friends, she says, want to go out with her.

“I’m surrounded by celebrities who are constantly discussing their personal lives. I’m the same Preity Zinta I used to be. You won’t find me discussing my private life in detail. I’m in a very good space right now,” Preity told IANS.

“The only problem is any man whom I’m seen with in public is automatically linked with me. I’ve come to a place where none of my male friends want to go out with me anymore! I think I’ll just have to pick my date for the next public event through a contest!” she added laughing.

Preity, who is co-owner of Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab, has to cope with being linked to not only her co-stars but also cricketers now.

“Can you imagine, members of my own team! I’ve always maintained I’d never mix business and pleasure. Now that I’m getting fully into business, I’m narrowing my chances of finding a man. I know I’d never get into criminal activities, so maybe…”

Talking about her new equation with former boyfriend Ness Wadia, Preity said: “The media has been trying to find awkwardness in our equation. Why should that be? We’re still good friends. We’re no longer seeing each other. We’re colleagues now.

“If ever I’m in a situation, I’m sure he’d watch my back, as I’d watch his. But would people let go of this fascination with the equation between me and Ness? It’s been one year since we broke up.”

Preity has been spending a lot of time outside Mumbai and says she goes out of the city to avoid prying eyes.

“Whenever I’m not shooting I’m out of the country. Don’t get me wrong. I love Mumbai to death. But tell me what can an actor can do in the city if she isn’t working? I can’t go out partying. I can’t even take a jog. What do I do on a Sunday? I can’t even go out.

“Now (after the Ness episode) it’s become worse. I can’t go out with any guy. If I do I’ve to beg some women to come along, otherwise the guy and I get linked up. I can’t handle it anymore,” said Preity.

She describes her stint at the Harvard Business School as the best time of her life. “I took the plunge in December and went back to school, to Harvard School. Believe you me, it was the most enriching experience of my life. I didn’t do it because I wanted to go back to college. I wanted to learn about business management so I could be a better entrepreneur.”

“I had the best time of my life. I felt so proud to see so many young Asian students in Harvard. That was the future…I learnt negotiations and mergers, acquisitions, etc. There were students from all over the world, including, of course Asians. More than just the course, the questions that the students asked were so pertinent.”

Preity is ready to get back to films in a big way now. “But as far as my role in the IPL cricket team is concerned it’s all settled down now… My focus is now back to movies. I’m on the verge of signing new films.”

She says that 2010 will be a good year for her.

“Last year I was too busy experiencing life to talk about it. 2009 was a year of learning for me. Now I reap the dividends of what I learnt. I went back to college.

“I wasn’t travelling and nursing a broken heart. Just because I wasn’t giving explanations. The worst you can do to someone who’s recovering from an emotional setback is to crowd them. I should’ve been left alone. It’s like a death in your family.

“Those condolence calls just set your teeth on edge. My way of dealing with my breakup was to move on. The Harvard experience really rejuvenated me. I’ve come back a different person. You watch 2010 is going to be the best year of my life. As Mr. (Amitabh) Bachchan would say, it’s going to be mindboggling.”

‘Naughty’ Shahid visits Delhi

He came to promote his latest film, but ended up revisiting quite a few old memories.

When Shahid Kapoor came to Delhi to visit his alma mater and his former residence a few days ago, little did he anticipate such a rush of memories and people. “Such is life,” Shahid said, “It’s humbling. Once, I was one of the thousand students doing morning prayers in this school. But God’s been so kind. Now, I need special permission or security to get me here.”

At Gyan Bharti Public School in Saket, the actor interacted with students, his teachers and the principal. Shahid, who had moved to Mumbai when he was 10, upon reaching his school, said, “Schooling in Delhi was fun. It was tougher in Mumbai, where I was a bit of an outsider.” By the time we accompanied him to his former house in Press Enclave, the crowd had grown significantly. As soon as Shasha (as he’s called) reached the house he grew up in, neighbours gathered around, each wanting to remind him of the moments they’d shared. One of them told us, “He was so naughty. Once, he put firecrackers in the postbox and blew it up!”

Shahid’s neighbours, Rohini and Gaurav, also told us similar tales, “We’d play together in the evening and would often end up fighting.” Their mother said, “Arrey… bade shararti the sab. They’d pull each other’s hair too.”

We also met Mamu, Shahid’s Man Friday. “Mamu is the one who was with me in Delhi, and is now with me in Mumbai,” said Shahid. Mamu has known Shahid since he was a child, and even pointed out the shed in which he used to live outside Shahid’s B-16 apartment. “Maine Shahid ke saath inhi parks mein cricket khela hai,” Mamu said, pointing to the lawns outside the house.

The Kapoor at number B-16

On Wednesay, Shahid Kapoor came back to visit the house and school where he spent his formative years. He then revisited the memories with DT that make these places special…

What do your years in Delhi mean to you?
This visit was very nostalgic. Delhi’s home. I love the weather here, whether it is summer or winter. Going back to my school, my home was very special. I really enjoyed my schooling in Delhi. In Mumbai, it was a bit tougher for me, because I was a bit of an outsider.

Is there a kick in coming back as a celebrity alumnus?
On the contrary, it is very humbling and brings you back to reality. I was one of the thousand students saying their morning prayers here. But God has been so kind. I am now at a point from where you need special permission or security to get me here.

Somewhere I feel it is too much. I am happy and fortunate to have it. But, it makes me feel good because some of the children there will have dreams and will think if he can do it, I can do it.

Did you ever get in trouble as a child?
Once I ran away from school with my friend. Actually, one of my best friends, Sidharth Lakhanpal, asked me to come to his place. His elder sister told the guard yeh mere saath hain… inhe jaane do. But, I forgot to tell my mom. She panicked. I remember, I was sitting in Sidharth’s house playing Lego and my mum reached there. With cops. She had looked everywhere for me. I got whacked that day. She was livid.

You lived with your maternal grandparents during this time in Delhi?
Yes. My maternal grandfather walked me to school every day. That was a special memory. His name was Anwar Azeem. I was in love with him; we had the closest bond ever. I used to hold his hand and walk, and he would keep talking to me about life and would give me that bit of gyaan I needed every day. A lot of what I am is because of what he taught me.

What are you like?
More mature, perhaps more responsible. I started earning very early on in life, in fact, when I was perhaps 16-years-old. And I used that money to sustain myself, and not on girlfriends. I would occasionally pitch in with the household expenditure and say, ‘Mum, I’ll pay the electricity bill this month.’ She would swell with pride.

From a loving partner in Vivah to a petty criminal in Kaminey and a teacher in Paathshaala, your roles have been diverse. Do you look for similarities between yourself and the characters you play?
As an actor, it’s very difficult to find a role that you can identify with. I identify with the process and all the roles that I have done have a certain part of me. Possibly, there is a Prem (Vivah), a kamina (Kaminey) and a Aditya Kashyap (Jab We Met) in me. I try to bring out facets that are deep down as part of my personality, in my roles.

For which character did you have to dig deepest within yourself?
Charlie from Kaminey, undoubtedly.

Lately, you seem to have let go of certain boundaries around yourself and are now addressing people and questions…
I have heard that a lot. I take time to open up ya. How I am with my friends is something very few know. Now, I am quite chilled out with the media too. Earlier, post my break-up, too much was being written about me and I felt the need to hold on to whatever little I had. But, I have an equation with people now, and I am willing to open up more. But then, there will be a certain part I want to hold on to.

People are always curious about you, especially your private life
They always want to know that! It’s mixed emotion; somewhere it feels a little nice that people are so curious about you. They want to know about you. But like I said, there are some things that are private, that you want to hold on to. When I find someone I want to spend my life with, I’ll come out and talk about it. I will make a public announcement. But, let me reach there, and there’s time for that.

What makes you so popular with girls?
You know, there’s a rule with women and I cannot understand why it is like that. The more you run away from them, the more they are interested in you. The more interest you show in them, the more they throw tantrums and behave like oh-we-are-not-interested-in-you. It’s really unbelievable. It’s amazing why. It’s a weird irony that exists in every woman. I can’t figure out why.

Did you learn this by experience or are these someone’s wise words?
I’ve learnt it the hard way yaar. I gave so much importance to my girlfriends and I got ignored completely. And now that I don’t give any importance, I get much more importance.

You started in Bollywood as a background dancer in movies like Dil Toh Paagal Hai and Taal?
Yes. It’s been a long journey. At that time, I was completely enjoying myself, not really thinking about life.

But you knew you had to be an actor…
What happens is… it is a very far off dream that you don’t believe will actually come true. You actually think yeh mujhe karna hai, but somewhere at the back of your head you are like, but how. These things don’t happen. But for me, it happened. I am living my dream.

It came true, but always, in the midst of controversies. It was reported that you trouble your directors and recently also refused your mother’s film
I now don’t give importance to things that don’t deserve it. Because people are gonna talk and you can’t do anything about it. People who matter know what’s happening and that’s important. I focus on people who matter. I am answerable to them and not to everybody.

How has Bollywood treated you?
Bollywood is home for me now. It’s wrong to say that it’s family for me, from a personal level. But it’s my family, professionally. Also, I’ve learnt that it’s all about consistency and keeping your head in the right place and focusing on your work. Because, eventually, all the frills that come with it are only because of the work you do. That’s what you need to focus on. Everything else is a distraction.

Does not being able to live a normal life bother you?
Yes. The first time I had to go to an awards ceremony, I went to Lokhandwala in Mumbai to buy clothes. At that time I had just started off. Not everybody knew me.

Now, it’s difficult and sometimes you do wish that you just go out there and go to a place and maybe talk a walk. I want to feel normal at times, because it is important to.

Any ‘normal’, short-term desires at the moment?
I’ve been wanting to get a bigger place for myself. The other short term desire is to have food. Dilli ka khana bahut amazing hota hai.

Shahid’s padosans
As soon as Shahid reached his locality, all the ladies from the neighbourhood surrounded him. One of his neighbours told us, “He was shy, but fun with his own group of friends. Bahut cricket khelta tha, Mamu ko le ja ke hamesha bowling karwata tha.” Mamu is Shahid’s Man Friday.
Even as a teenager, Shahid new that he wanted to be an actor. Here, we see him with his grandparents. He says, “Even as a gawky 15-year-old, I knew ki mujhe hero banna hai. I now look at the pic and think – yaar, did this guy never see a mirror?”

Lady Gaga Steps Out in Sweden

Lady Gaga is not to be outdone.

Amid chatter about whether she copied Christina Aguilera or vice versa, the pop star opted for a stripped-down streamlined look in Stockholm, Sweden.

As Lady Gaga fashion goes, this is one of our favorite looks.

Not only do we love the coat, it looks like she’s fleeing her hotel after the fire alarm went off and simply forgot / didn’t have time to get dressed …

Just a typical day in the life of Lady Gaga.

The rumored hermaphrodite was actually headed to the studio here, not to do a live show. Hey, sometimes you’ve gotta go all-out while you record as well.

Michelle McGee: Men Will Spread Their Seed

The Michelle McGee PR tour continues.

Relentlessly milking her infamous status as Jesse James’ mistress for every cent it’s worth, “Bombshell” is featured in the new issue of Steppin’ Out magazine.

What a cheap hack. Pretty gross, too.

Apparently under the impression people care what she thinks, Michelle McGee before she became a mistress, she believed “if a man cheats it’s horrible.”

But now? “I think men are made to spread their seed. Women need to accept that. You need to know that men are not meant to be with one woman.”

Michael Douglas storms Cannes in Wall Street

Michael Douglas stormed the Cannes film festival on Friday with a crackling performance as the rogue banker Gordon Gekko alongside Shia LaBeouf in Oliver Stone’s blockbuster ‘Wall Street’ sequel.

The 65-year-old US star lined up alongside his on-screen son LaBeouf, British actress Carey Mulligan who plays Gekko’s daughter, and actor Josh Brolin, the film’s lead banker villain.

In “Wall Street — Money Never Sleeps”, Douglas reprises his role from the 1987 original as the investment fraudster Gekko, who coined the term “greed is good”.

In the new film, Gekko comes out of jail older and wiser — but with the same reptilian instincts — and reconnects with his estranged daughter at the dawn of the financial crisis.

“This is a story about family,” said Stone, who dedicated the first “Wall Street” to his own father, a stockbroker.

“This is a story about people who are balancing their love of power and money with their need for love,” Stone told a press conference on Friday.

The film-maker said the movie, which screens out of competition at the annual Cannes film bonanza, responded to the financial recklessness that led to the recent crisis.

“The greed has not stopped,” Douglas said, quoting his character in the film. “It became legal.”

Happy 24th Birthday, Robert Pattinson!

Forget New Year’s Eve, college graduation, or, heck, even Flag Day.

Today is the most momentous occasion of 2010 for millions of Twilight Saga fans around the world. That’s because Robert Pattinson turns 24. Cue screams in 3…2…1…

After laying low for a few months, filming a new movie and remaining out of the spotlight where he’s most comfortable, Pattinson will be featured on numerous magazine covers and talk shows over the next few weeks, promoting Eclipse.

It’s already started: check out Robert’s spread in South Africa’s GQ and tune in today to The Oprah Winfrey Show, where he, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will sit down with the host.
We know one thing Stewart did NOT get Pattinson for his birthday: a baby.

As for his adoring fans, Rob isn’t the kind of guy that focuses on the material world. He’d probably just accept a hug, or, if you’re not in his immediate vicinity, birthday wishes that THG will be sure to pass along
